19th Century Multi-faced figure of an important person, from the Lega peoples, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Made of a single piece of carved wood, the faces are decorated with white koalin clay, the body stained dark with oil.
Approx. 17 inches high.
Lega art is primarily used ceremonially by and for members of the "Bwami" society, which regulates nearly all aspects of Lega social and ritual life. Multi-headed figures are thought to represent the ability of advanced Bwami members to see in many directions and be fair-minded and wise.
Lega sculptures are valued by collectors for their enchanting abstracted forms.
Aged condition with good patina and multiple indications of use, including some nicks and wood-losses as can be seen in the photos.
