In this dramatic Victorian Berlin woolwork embroidery, the stitcher has presented us with a period hunting scene. It is a complete depiction of a dog defending his owner’s catch of a pheasant from a determined adversary.

The scene is set in a forest clearing with small mountains and a loch beyond. Trees, shrubs and smaller flora are also present. The stitcher used a bright red yarn to accent the excitement.

The woolwork was done in even rows of fine, soft yarn. The principle colors harmonize wonderfully with one another, making for a fine piece of antique needlework.

The work is encased in its original Victorian, hand-carved rosewood frame. The fine carving is elaborate with scrolls interrupted by round, turned, raised circles. The color of the rosewood has turned a beautiful, deep brown with a soft, glowing patina. The glass is old, with bubbles and waves. The frame retains its original silk backing. There is evidence that this framed picture was once the top portion of a pole stand. However, due to its size and framing it makes an exceptional wall piece. The combination of the beautifully carved wood with the dramatic scene is mesmerizingly decorative.

The needlework is in excellent condition and fine color retention, especially for a piece that is about 160 years old. There is no insect damage or staining. It has been well cared for. The frame is also in excellent condition.

It measures 19 inches wide by 16 inches high, including the frame.
