Antique Working Veteran Drake Decoy
This CA 1915 antique working decoy comes from a barn in Rhode Island, part of a treasure trove of decoys found while cleaning out the barn. The drake decoy is a true veteran having been through the decoy wars. One side of his face and beak is damaged and on the other side of his head and body are a bunch of marks from a hunter. He is 14” long x 5 1/2” wide and is about 6 1/2” tall. The head is attached with what appears to be a long nail driven down from the top through the neck and into the body. He has rounded head nails for eyes, a weight on the underside, an eye for attaching a line, and a couple of wooden pegs in the body near the tail. With what remains of the original paint he exudes all kinds of character. He has the worn remains of what was very distinctive carved feathering and all the nicks and small scrapes from years of service.
