This vintage whimsical Tom Clark gnome "Able" bookend is in mint condition. He stands 6 1/2"tall, is 4 1/4" wide and is 3 7/8" deep. It is marked 1989 and has long been retired. Tom Clark is an artist that made a series based on gnomes. The figures were made of resin and pecan shells and each were hand painted. Mr. Clark is in his nineties and is no longer making gnomes, but Tom Clark's art is still a sought after item in the vintage market. His art has touched and still touches countless people over the last 50 years.
This would be a great gift for anyone that reads books about fairy tales, elves, and gnomes. It would be a perfect bookend to hold up the "Lord of the Rings" series.
Here is the back story on the piece. Able has come upon a book that seeks to abolish all stories about fantasy. The pages read, "We all know that gnomes do not exist." Able's coin is a gaming token because he's willing to bet that there are gnomes, in fact, Able likes to whisper to collectors as they walk by, "Gnomes are - believe Able!"
