HERE’S AN ORIGINAL ANTIQUE 18TH OR 19TH CENTURY ITALIAN PICTORIAL MARQUETRY WOOD INLAY PANEL THAT DISPLAYS A RENAISSANCE GENRE SCENE INVOLVING A BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURAL ROOM SETTING IN WHICH TWO WELL-DRESSED NOBLEMEN ARE SITTING AND DRINKING AT A LARGE TABLE WHILE A YOUNG SERVANT MAIDEN ENTERS CARRYING A TRAY WITH A STEIN!
Dimensions: This Italian pictorial marquetry panel measures approximately sixteen and one eighth inches (16 1/8”) in height, seventeen and three eighths inches (17 3/8”) in width, by one quarter of an inch (1/4”) in thickness.
This original antique 18th or 19th century Italian pictorial marquetry wood inlay panel displays a Renaissance genre room scene with beautiful architectural design elements. The room’s ceiling displays finely-finished wood beams that meet up with a paneled wall displaying three dark archways above which is a built-in shelf and a bench along the bottom. A dog is curled up asleep on an exquisitely grained oak floor and the far wall is rendered with a recessed arched multi-pane window that looks out onto other buildings. The room is finished with a large fabric curtain that is tied back on the room’s right-hand side.
Within this room’s interior are two noblemen seated at a large wooden table while regaling one another in drink. One man is still wearing his hat while the other has placed his hat on the bench situated behind him. A young servant maiden has entered the room carrying a tray with a large stein.
Other components of the room setting include a candle-lit light fixture hanging from the ceiling, most likely rendered in ebony wood, and three serving vessels positioned along the shelf affixed to the left-side wall. It should also be pointed out that the young servant maiden is casting a backward shadow positioned along the oak floor.
The Italian artist who created this pictorial marquetry panel employed a strong visual sense of “chiaroscuro” where light and dark elements intensify three-dimensional qualities on a two-dimensional plane.
And while no maker’s mark can be located on this pictorial marquetry panel, the emphasis on architectural components as aesthetic devices is certainly in keeping with the artistic vein of Italian cabinetmakers Ignazio Ravelli and his son Luigi Ravelli.
Condition: Generally very good and clean condition with some small surface markings and scuffs, minor surface impressions, a small chip in the top left corner with some minor wood loss. In addition, the hanging device attached to the backside has been added, which includes two small screws and picture wire.
Regardless of the faults mentioned, this is still a beautiful example of antique Italian pictorial marquetry!
