This well-collected artist lived a very interesting life. Rizek essentially trained himself as he traveled. He developed a personal style based in realism, with city views and genre scenes of everyday work and life becoming his favorite subjects. His figurative works often portrayed laborers or workers with whom he felt a significant bond. He painted the marketplace of Bali and the ports of Northern Europe with equal flair. It seems that this period in his life produced his most lauded works. When he returned to Vienna, a dark period of his life began. He was pressured by the Nazi occupiers to have his work conform to their acceptable subjects. He was then conscripted to war service. Rizek wrote to a friend of the “devastating psychological effect of fascism on individual mental development.”
In 1941, Rizek served in the Wehrmacht as a war artist and reporter, primarily in Finland. He was captured by the British army and spent ten months as a prisoner in Ostfriesland near the end of the war. Rizek, like all soldiers engaged in combat, suffered a degree of PTSD. He wrote to friends about how he was emotionally drained by his experiences in the war, and found it extremely difficult to return to painting.
As he began to find his artistic creativity again, he would travel to Ostfriesia in nortnwest Germany every ear. He developed his use and application of light.
In 1963 the Artist’s Guild of Vienna awarded Emil Rizek a special gold medal in recognition of his artistic achievements. However, his career and reputation suffered with many collectors due to his Wehrmacht service, in spite of his having been involuntarily conscripted. In spite of this, his work was well recognized and collected.
His high public price for a single work - $123,000.00.
Emil Rizek died in Vienna in 1988.
