This charming hand painted cream jug was made in France by 18th century faïencerie, Veuve Perrin. The Marseille based Perrin faience factory was founded in 1733 by Claude Perrin, which he ran until his death in 1748. At that point, his widow Pierette Candelot assumed control and the firm became known by as Veuve Perrin (translated as Widow Perrin), marking its wares with a conjoined "VP" monogram. Candelot's son Joseph and daughter Anne took over the factory after her death in 1794, running the firm until it closed in 1803.

The French faience cream jug features polychrome decoration on a white ground. One side of the piece is painted with a traditional outdoor harvest scene populated by a man and woman gathering wheat while the opposite side is decorated with a large floral bouquet. The remainder of the jug is painted with several sprigs of pink, blue and purple flowers along with green foliage. The arched handle has been painted yellow and highlighted with brown accents, and is finished with a thumb tab at the top to aid in pouring liquid. The cream jug's neck and spout are also accented with rose and yellow paint which complement the colors used on the rest of the piece.

The cream jug has been exceptionally well cared for and in very good antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. That said, it should be noted that there are some rough areas and marks to the underside of the foot which are related to the production process. There are also anomalies to the glaze on the exterior commonly found in antique faience including pinpoint glaze pops and bits of material caught under the glaze.

The piece stands 6" tall and is 3.5" from the back edge of the handle to the front of the spout. The mouth is 1.375" across and the foot is 2.25" in diameter. The underside of the cream jug bears a hand painted conjoined "VP" mark for Veuve Perrin and is also impressed with the number "99". The item weighs in at 10.5oz.

This beautiful cream jug would be a great addition to a collection of French faience, or to a specific grouping of Veuve Perrin pieces. It displays beautifully and is nicely sized for display on a desk, dresser or shelf. A fantastic antique find!
