This is a primitive or folk art frame. The design is hand-carved (called whittling in the day) with notches. The corners are crossed giving the frame support and stability. Three of the corners still have the square nails as seen from the back. The wood and finish are very dark. The frame measures 13 1/2" x 12". The inside measurement is 7" x 9". Note one side (the top with the present hanger) does not have the inside groove for the glass or picture insert. It does not appear there ever was one. There are chips on two of the corners. There possibly were decorations on all 4 corners. None of these are currently on the frame. This is a nice piece for the primitive collector.
