This is a circa 1909 -1920 (no date) British Books Ltd. 'The Laughing Man', by Victor Hugo, illustrated by Paul Hardy, London. It has 444 pages. This black pebbled leather-look pocket books is 6"x 4 1/4" with an intricate gold leaf embossed spine, gold gilt edges on the top, as well as author's signature on cover. B&W frontispieces. The book is near fine condition with light browning on the interior pages.

The Man Who Laughs is a novel by Victor Hugo, originally published in April 1869 under the French title L'Homme qui rit. It takes place in England beginning in 1690 and extends into the early 18th century reign of Queen Anne. It depicts England's royalty and aristocracy of the time as cruel and power-hungry.
