Offering this original oil sketch on canvas board by the listed Cincinnati, OH, artist Martha Wilby Schaeffer. Fantastic regional WPA style painting featuring the Fisherman's Cafe with a black man standing in front. This was likely a study for a larger painting or mural. This work came directly from the artist's estate in the Cincinnati area. This work was likely completed in the 1940s or 50s. The board measures 18 x 14 inches, unframed as found. Note the canvas board was cut down from a larger one, thus two of the edges are rough along the cut lines which are nice and even. This is a great example of the artist's work with a minimal look and feel. In my opinion it's unfinished look is very charming and gives it a certain kind of character and appeal. In the right frame this one will really shine. Great Artisan-American / Black subject matter.
Measures 18 x 14 in good condition. Signed front lower right corner, name stamped on verso. Unframed.
