RARE Vintage 1980s Averill Shepps USA Copper & Silver Enamel Abstract Modernist Framed ARTWORK - image 1 of 8

For sale here is an original vintage 1980s copper and silver enamel abstract modernist artwork by American enamelist Averill Shepps (b.1933) of Pennsylvania. Shepps is an important American enamelist of the 20th century, and this is a unique one of a kind artwork from 1988. This artwork reminds me of fish amongst a coral reef, but I'm sure that various interpretations of the abstract forms exist and vary with the viewer. Here's a short bio of the artist that I compiled from online sources (The Enamel Arts Foundation, and The Center for Enamel Art):

Averill Shepps is best known for her richly colored trays and wall-mounted plaques with quietly evocative natural subjects such as trees, flowers, and plant forms. These subjects are often rendered in silver foils or paillons which form a brilliant contrast to the subtle colors of her enamel palette. Shepps received her bachelor of arts degree from Smith College in 1953 where she majored in geology and minored in art. She continued her studies in geology at the University of Illinois but soon realized that, because she was a woman, there would be few professional opportunities available to her. Instead she decided to pursue her interest in art. She took her first class in enameling in 1958 at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen where she studied with James Frappe. After the birth of her son in 1963 and the untimely death of her husband in 1967, Shepps decided to pursue enameling as a full time professional career. Shepps has participated in numerous exhibitions including the second American Craft Council exhibition in 1966, where she met the renowned enamelist Harold B. “Bill” Helwig. She served as President of the Harrisburg Craftsmen in 1969 and worked for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts from 1973 to 1976. She currently serves as President of the Enamelist Society, an association of artists, collectors, and enthusiasts interested in the enamels field. She is a (mostly) self-taught enamelist who has a particular interest in experimental work. Her science background helps her to understand and use the often peculiar technical aspects of the medium. She has been called the “Mad Scientist.” Her work has been widely exhibited in International Juried Exhibitions sponsored by The Enamelist Society, in invitational exhibitions, and is represented in the collection of the Enamel Arts Foundation. In addition to the United States, she has exhibited in Canada, England and South Korea. Work is also featured in several books, including: “Little Dreams in Glass and Metal: Enameling in America 1920 to the Present”, Jazzur and Nelson; “Contemporary Enameling: Art & Techniques, Bachrach; “The Art of Fine Enameling”, Cohen; “500 Enameled Objects”. She was President of the Enamelist Society for 12 years and is a recipient of the Society’s Woodrow W. Carpenter Award given to those who have worked to benefit the world of enameling.

This artwork consists of three enamel over silver over copper panels each measuring 9" long by 1-1/2" wide which are laid down on board that is then mounted on a complimentary matting and framed. The outside edges of the frame measure 17-1/4" tall by 9-1/4" wide. The artwork is signed in the lower right corner, "Averill '88". Other than some staining to the back papers as shown in my photos, this artwork is in excellent original condition with just fine light wear to the edges of the frame but no damage or loss to the enamel panels as shown - please view the photos, read the description, and ask all questions prior to purchase. I am open to reasonable offers from serious buyers.
