This Magnificent And Rare Italian Polychrome Sculpture of The Virgin And Christ Child is Really "Beauty Personified". The Facial Qualities The Sculpture Has Imparted to This Masterpiece Have Created an Aesthetic That Almost Breathes Life. Almost Certainly Carved For a Specific Niche or Private Devotional Space The Figure is Carved in The Round , Although There is Limited Detailing To The Reverse. This Was Clearly Deliberate as The Sculpture Was Supposed To Offer Three Viewing Angles Only. This Sculpture Has Been Fashioned in The Baroque Manner And After Carving, Has Been Gessoed, Gilded And Hand Painted. The Popular Iconography of the Virgin Supporting Her Infant Child With Her Hand And Torso Originates From Earlier Times But The Liveliness And Vitality This Sculpture Offers Juxtaposed With The Soft Flowing Robes Creates a Visually Animated Work of Sculptural Art That Many Other Examples Do Not Offer. The Christ Child Sits Contently Upon His Mother Holding The Orb in His Left Hand. What is Also Rather Unique to This Sculpture is, That Upon Close Inspection, One Can See a Subtle Smile Upon The Saviours Face. This Sculpture is Without Question a Masterfully Carved Work of Art And Clearly Comes From The Hand of a Master Craftsman or Workshop. Further Provenance is Indicated on The Reverse Side of The Statue Where One Can See The Faded Remnants of a Makers Stamp or Perhaps a Collectors Inventory Stamp. It is Indeed Worthy of Further Research. Remarkably This Sculpture Remains Entirely Original. The Condition is Very Stable With Losses Confined to What is Typical For Sculptures of This Type And Age. There Are Several Areas Upon The Virgins Garment Revealing Either the Gesso or The Wooden Substrate. That Being Said, I Would be Suspicious if This Was Not Present. The Infants Left Arm Has Been Reattached With Glue And is Stable And original To The Statue. The Skin Elements of This Sculpture Are Remarkably Well Preserved Which is Always a Very Desirable Aspect For Collectors And Connoisseurs. It Would Make The Perfect Gift For Both Devotional And Decorative Purposes.
