Antique Folk Art 1834 Wooden Box - image 1 of 9

This is a fabulous rustic Antique Folk Art Wooden Box measuring 8 1/4" long, 5 1/2" wide and 3 1/2" tall. It could have been used as a letter or money box. I don't recognize the wood grain, but it has a wonderful golden patina. The lid has a geometric design of darker stained wood. There is a key hold with a protective panel, but no key. The inside bottom is aged, but clean. The unique part is to turn the metal piece level on the inner lid board to enter another section of the box! Inside this area printed in black one finds the name J. Olson Norge 1834. There is also a printed 1834 on the inside of the lid. The hinges and closure are in fine shape. The box closes tightly. For its age it is in wonderful condition. Only a few scuffs and light surface scratches. There is a 1" chunk of wood chipped away on the outside bottom. I believe this box to be one of a kind and may have been made by the person whose name appears on the inside. I found this piece at an Antique Fair outside of Austin, Texas. The box could possibly have been made by an early settler in central Texas.
