This is a rather unusual item. It's a Mauchline playing card box. It is circa 1880 and there are three cards pictured on the front, with a decorative etching in the corners. On the lower part of the box we have two etchings. One is the cottage of Robert Burns, National Poet of Scotland, and the other is Alloway Kirk. The top side of the box reads " Made of Wood which grew near Alloway Kirk, on the banks of the Doon." The inside of this box has dividers for playing cards and a place for playing chips. This box is in very good shape for its 120 years. The biggest problem it has is that the top sides are warped so that the lid, though tight, doesn't close completely. You can see this in one of the pictures, but please excuse the flash glare on that one. This box measures 8 inches East to West, and 4 and 1/2 inches North to South. It is 1 and 1/2 inches deep. This would be an interesting item for any box collector, or card enthusiast.
