This set of Gilt bronze bookends is marked 'real bronze & '9655' on the back. In the 'Collector's Encyclopedia of Bookends' an almost identical set is shown under the title 'horse family'. The set in the book is listed as being cast iron, marked No. 09855, and has a hole in the wall near the base on each bookend. These 3 things are the only differences. This leads me to believe Judd made bronze sets, like the one we have here, the sametime as they made the cast iron sets. According to the Encyclopedia that was around 1930. While researching this set I found other examples of the cast iron sets with the holes. I could not find another pair like this with no holes and marked 'real bronze' so they maybe rather rare. This set has a gold painted finish. The pair is in good used condition. However they do have some minor wear including a dark spot on a rock at the base of one end. Please review the pictures carefully to see the condition of this attractive set.
