This is a hypnotic, untitled pencil-on-board portrait of a Tsongan-Shangaan - a sub-group of the Zulu - young woman, in good condition but showing some modest vicissitudes of time (including one bead from the vuhlalu necklace that has lost it's fixative coating). Fortunately, because a fixative was applied early to preserve the work, this wonderful piece has not been been lost to time. It is only a guess, but we're placing the work sometime in the late 19th century, perhaps early 20th century. Measuring 18" x 10" sight and no frame.

The Tsonga-Shangaan have occupied southern Mozambique and northern South Africa for over a thousand years. Known for their colorful dresses and other body ornaments which include the bright head wrap known as "duku," hand bracelets called "deha" and necklace beads called "vuhlalu."

The work is signed by John Fairbanks. There is little evidence, including signature comparison, that this is the self-same Mormon landscape artist, though the LDS did send him to Europe for two years on a "art" mission in the 1890s, opening the door for the possibility. It would certainly make the work much more valuable if it can be ascertained with certainty. We have not been able to attribute the work to this or any other John Fairbanks with any certainty, beyond the attached signature, so the work has been priced accordingly.
