From the Introduction of the accompanying booklet NOTES FROM THE EDITORS

John Farquhar Fulton (1899-1960) first served under Harvey Cushing as an Associate Neurological Fellow at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital during 1927 and 1928. Finding immense common ground in their love of books, Fulton developed a close friendship with Cushing, eventually persuading him to spend his last years at Yale Medical Historical Library.

Cushing, who died in 1939, provided in his will funds to research and publish an account of his life - if it was felt "that the publication of my biography might be of interest or help to medical student." Fulton had an interest in the history of prominent men in medicine and had already written biographical sketches fort "The Dictionary of American Biography," in addition to short obituaries for various journals. Soon after he took on the task of writing a life of Cushing, the Second World War escalated. Fulton temporarily shelved the massive project to serve on several committees of the National Research Council, gathering research for this biography as time permitted. "Harvey Cushing: A Biography" was completed and published in 1946.

Written in understandable language, with the layperson as well as the medical student in mind, "Harvey Cushing" has been praised as an "outstanding biography of one of America's greatest surgeons," and Fulton's "most important historical work."
