ReUnions is proud to present this large and impressive handled serving tray or platter decorated in the Poppy Conventional pattern by George Leach. This platter measures about 10.75 inches in diameter, 11.75 inches handle to handle, and stands about 1.5 inches tall at the handles. The porcelain blank bears the maker's mark BMdeM Limoges France for Balleroy Mandavy De Mavaleix, and Pickard Mark 5 (1905-1910). It is signed Leach for decorator George Leach.

Against a broad gold rim with oxblood penwork scrolls, five conventionalized brilliant red-orange poppies circle the platter, their green foliage circling around a central gold medallion against a warm cream ground. The poppies and foliage are outlined in fine gold tracery and there are abundant gold enhancements to the poppies' central seeds. The porcelain blank has a floral ornamentation on the handles.

The serving tray is in overall very good condition. There are no chips or cracks, and while the gold shows some surface scratches, it is intact with only some minor rubbing at the handles.

ReUnions has ReUnited an array of hand-painted china in poppy motives from makers like Pickard, Donath and other studios, as seen in the final photo. Visit our shop for the complete selection.

About Pickard China

Wilder A. Pickard founded Pickard China in the 1890s to produce fine hand-decorated china for the American market. Importing blank porcelain from major European makers, Pickard artists designed and executed beautiful hand-painted tableware that was sold in the finest department stores and jewelers. His Chicago studios employed hundreds of decorators and artists through the years, many of whom went on to go into business for themselves. Today, Pickard China produces and decorates its own china here in the US, offering classic and contemporary patterns featuring Pickard’s signature application of 22K gold. Pickard China is featured in the US State Department’s embassies around the world, and they have produced sets for the White House and Air Force One.

About the Artist

George Leach was born in Ireland in 1879 and was brought to America by his parents shortly thereafter. He worked for Pickard during the first decade of the twentieth century, then joined Stouffer Studios in 1911, followed by a stint at Rogers-Martini before opening his own studio.
