This is a nice example of a Goberg chamberstick, or single candlestick, with a handle. It is designed to be carried from room to room. Typical of Goberg's work this piece shows the hand hammered designs and texture for which he is so well known. It is made with very heavy gauge iron suggesting that it is his earlier work. Overall the piece is in wonderful antique condition. It retains much of its original varnish which Goberg frequently applied to the metal surfaces. This combined with a mild layer of oxidation has produced a wonderful soft patina. The metalwork is solid with no loose parts. It sits flat and looks great on a table. The underside of the base has the remains of some dried leather which was used to cover the base at one time. This does not impact on the condition of the piece and could be easily removed if the new owner wished to do so. The total height of the chamberstick is about 7 3/8 inches and the circular base is about 5 ½ inches in diameter. Attached to the base there is a dimpled match box holder. It is a very nice example of Goberg’s work, it shows well, and is ready for your next power outage. Rest assured that wherever you put this beautiful chamberstick with a candle it is bound to draw many great looks and comments.
Known primarily for his hammered iron pieces, Goberg (Hugo Berger) is best known for his wide-ranging variety of candlesticks. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil or Secessionist movement of the same time frame. Much of his work was sold at Liberty of London with an occasional piece finding its way to the U.S.
