This staved container is a wonderful example of primitive Scandinavian folk art. The container stands a total of 8 ¼ inches tall and is approximately 6 ¾ inches in diameter. Construction consists of 16 staves of varying widths, two of which extend on top to form “wings” in order to anchor the lid. There are four sets of root bands that are used to hold the staves together. These bands are all original. The lid is a beveled disk of wood that is fitted with a shaped handle that is attached from the underside with small brads. There is a peg extending from one side of the handle that fits into a hole in one of the extended wings. It helps to anchor the lid but does not lock the lid down. The other end of the handle fits up against the other wing but does not have any method of attachment to the container. Consequently, the lid cannot be locked on as was usually done with containers of this type. The bottom of the container is mortised into the sides and is convex shaped in a curve so that it sits proud inside the container.

The condition of the container is consistent with its age and use. The staves have shrunken slightly over time so that some of them are slightly loose, but are in no danger of jeopardizing the integrity of the container. The bands around the staves are solid with only minimal amounts of play in them. Most of the original painted surfaces are still intact, although there is the usual loss from chipping and scraping. The bands all retain much of their origin oxblood colored paint. At some time the box was covered with a thick layer of varnish which is now lifting up or flaking off in random locations. There does not appear to be any insect damage. If you are into folk art, Scandinavian primitives, or allmoge, then you do not want to miss out on this item.
