Dating to c.300 AD, I am thrilled to present this ancient Roman gold sandwich glass bead necklace for the consideration of my Ruby Lane clientele!
Measuring 20" long x 1" wide, this ancient necklace is extra-special; it is made from Roman gold glass beads! Beginning in the 3rd century AD, the Romans produced this highly-sought after material, which would continued to be made until the early 5th century AD. The technique required to make these beads was time consuming as well as complicated; the Romans fired glass around a sheet of pure sheet gold, then layered glass on top; hence the term "sandwich gold."
This necklace is a fantastic example of this rarely-seen medium; it has survived 1700+ years in 100% intact condition, save a restringing of the original elements! This necklace consists of 23 larger, round graduated gold glass beads measuring from 1/4" at the back of the jewel to 5/8" in diameter for the largest. The beads are connected by smaller woven gold sandwich glass strands, which are also graduated in size.
Some of the larger gold beads display surface encrustations from burial, which gives those beads a more matte appearance. The colors of gold range from light gold to silvery gold to bronze, as the Roman bead-makers varied the shade with the making of each individual bead. This necklace also has a solid provenance; it was sold at a Bonham's London antiquities auction in 2014, and this information will be included in the paperwork!
Simply a gorgeous example of a lost jeweler's art, this Roman necklace is still wearable after 1700 years! It came to me with the silver gilt screw clasp you see here, and all of the beads are threaded on filament. This is one statement piece that transcends time; it looks so uniquely-beautiful around the neck; you will feel like a Roman matron of wealth and fashion!
If you collect the BEST in ancient jewelry, this rarity belongs around your neck and in your collection! It would also make a thrilling gift for any lady fond of ancient Roman history, and will be shipped in a gift box. As with all of my jewelry pre-dating 1700, this necklace will be sold with a COA and valuation for your insurance purposes at no extra cost. Do not miss this golden antiquity; up to 60-day layaway is available, and domestic USPS Priority mail shipping is FREE!
