Antique 19thC Staffordshire IOGT Temperance Fraternal Figurine
A rare Antique Staffordshire figurine or group depicting The International Organization of Good Templars. The IOGT was founded as the Independent Order of Good Templars. IOGT International works to promote the avoidance of alcohol and other drugs by supporting communities and societies around the world. Founded in 1851, their constitution claims that this will lead to the liberation of peoples of the world, this leading to a richer, freer and more rewarding life and unlike many, however, it admitted men and women equally, and also made no distinction by race.
This figurine dates from around the founding of the group, circa 1850-1860s or so. It is salt glazed pottery and was made in the Staffordshire region of England. There are two ladies and a gentleman each of them with letters on thier lapels, the gentleman has "WCTO" and both ladies "LHS". Sitting on a table in front of them is a book and the fringed tablecloth is marked "IOGT".
Overall dimensions are 11" high x 8 1/2" wide, it is heavy at over 3 pounds. The Fraternal Group is in very good overall condition with no chips or cracks. The only things are to note are in the making namely a tiny indent on the man's eye and a small shrink line in the clay on the back. This would have been a rare figurine even in it's time. The figurine would be great in an antique Temperance, Fraternal or Staffordshire collection.
