Made in France during the 1800’s, this oak trunk is of the Haute Epoque style. The Haute Epoque (or “High Age”) represents the second division of Medieval history, following the Early Middle Ages and preceding the Late Middle Ages. Items from the Haute Epoque typically did not have distinct designs, as styles varied from Gothic to Byzantine. However, most of the furnishings of this time were chests and trunks.

Our oak trunk has been assembled using dovetail construction, with the joinery visible on all surfaces. There are two iron oval handles on each side as well as a leaflike iron keyplate on the frontage. The keyplate is flanked by two recessed circles, which comprise the main decorative element of this piece. The large circles are deeply carved, representing a floret surrounded by three large leaves. Interestingly, the leaves of the left circle are arranged in a clockwise fashion, while the leaves of the right circle run counterclockwise.

Each of the surfaces of the trunk have two iron straps with spade-shaped tips that run over the edge and terminate on the neighboring side. These iron pieces are not only decorative, but serve to reinforce the boards of the box. Molding separates the sides from the adjoining aprons, which are highly shaped, except for the back. Similarly, the flat lid has molding on all sides except for the back.

This beautiful Haute Epoque oak and iron trunk can still be used for convenient storage. It is also small enough that it could be placed on a table as a decorative accessory.

CONDITION: Good condition, wear commensurate to age and use with age separations, minor losses, and minor stains to lid. No key. Light buildup and rubs specifically to the apron.
