A rare survivor from the 118th century. French in origin this is a beautiful example that is becoming hard to find. It does have some sympathetic 19th century repairs which can be forgiven, as they have enabled its future survival.

This small, two paneled purse was made as a drawstring purse for holding coins, likely a bridal/wedding gift. Its body is of colored glass beads netted on to silk, approx 324 per square inch. The naturalistic motifs are stunning and very vibrant, typical of mid 18th century sable beadwork. We love the ducal crown and interlaced black monogram. Having Ecru colored knotted top, green braid edging and ecru drawstrings. See similar 18th C sable beaded purse examples at the MFA, Boston and at The Met Museum, Accession Number: 62.264.1

Size: 3.5" tall by 4" wide

Condition: Sound, but showing its age a little. Some bead loss to the Ducal crown and various other small areas near the top, just under the drawstring band, approx 5% overall - please study our images. A replaced lining sometime in the later 19th century - we are undecided whether the drawstring and drawstring ecru band would also have been replaced at this time. Original 18th C tassels missing.

A rare chance to own a 1700s fashion item. Please see our other genuine 18th and early 19th century purse, reticules and bags. We have a passion for them and have retailed previous examples to museums, film sets, fashion icons and esteemed private collections.
