Here's simply fabulous sterling silver counter box from the late 19th century - circa 1880. It measures 2 1/4" by 1 6/8". It weighs 87.8 grams or 2.82 troy ounces. It is gilded on the inside. On the top and bottom are 2 wonderful scenes of a card game gone wrong. There are 4 card players at a table and 3 are fighting with the 4th man who looks calm. On the front the story follow on with a man running out of the house with his head in his hands while another man seems to hold a bag of coins. The scenes are in relief - beautifully done and highly detailed repousse work. The scene on the bottom is set back to protect the image. The top and the bottom have the 4 game suits - one in each corner. There is a name "Hovander" written on each side. It is possibly the artist who originated the scenes.
This box is one of those things I feel I may never see again - so wonderful. A perfect choice for a card player or gambler.
