Here's a very elegant early English sterling silver snuff box dated 1817. It measures 3 7/8" long and 1 3/8" wide and 1 1/4" high. It has a wonderful oval shape, and has an engine turned design on every side. The front has a beautiful repousse design. The inside is gilded and has a full set of hallmarks on the inside bottom, and 3 marks on the inside of the lid as well. The box weighs 100.6 grams. The
hallmarks have the standard mark for sterling (the lion passant), the city mark for London (the leopard head), the date letter for 1817, the duty mark (King George III), and the maker's mark W.E. (for William Ellerby).
The condition is excellent, with only the slightest signs of its age at 203 years old. It's a beautiful box, and it feels wonderful too.
