Here's a lovely early wooden box from around 1850. I believe it's British from the way its made, and the look of the scene on it. It measures 7 5/8" by 4 7/8" by 1 5/8" deep. On the top is a handsome period print with an impressive building surrounded by a fence, and soldiers that seem to be guarding the building across the street. A family is crossing the road, and the little girl points to a dog walking by. I'm not sure where this scene is. I would love to figure it out. The box has hand painted details - black designs and red lines decorate the top and 3 sides. The inside is lined in blue paper.
The condition is quite good for its age, and the only thing to note is the lid has to be opened by lifting it gingerly from the side. It once had a simple hinge but now the lid just rests in the recessed top of the box.
I love this piece because in it's 170 years or so it has pretty much been unaltered. It's a great survivor and a great looking box.
