This button is described at 18th century. The entire set of aerial "machines" appears in Peggy Ann Osborne's great button book. I have seen it described as 18th c. in the old Albert book. Anyway, my feeling is that it is a French late 19th c. commemorative of the 18th century and all its innovations (like the guillotine).... I may be wrong. The picture is drawn in ink and hand tinted, and humorously captioned "a dieu"--a play on adieu (farewell) that means "To God." The button is set in copper and in excellent condition, back and front. It measures 1 & 3/8" large.
