I saw this button years ago in a 1940s pamphlet from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Museum of Design, and never dreamed I would ever find one. This is a jasper ware button contemporaneous with the French Revolution, probably of French manufacture, set in gilded brass (possibly copper) with a steel back. The scene can be found in other media. The jasper is minutely detailed; armed men everywhere! The Bastille was stormed in 1789. It measures 1 & 1/4" large in very fine condition.
