This is a very rare large 1 & 7/16" button from England of hand painted enamel on copper--its former owner described it as a Bilston enamel and that what it looks like to me, too! Made in the mid-18th century, this button is in absolutely excellent condition. The enamel shines like glass. The pastoral scene of a ruined arch proceeds to a blue lake bounded by a fortified wall. The back and shank are copper. (The last image displays others of the original set.)
