This is a large 1 & 1/2" button from mid-18th century Georgian period--a gentleman's coat button. Sometimes 24 of these large buttons embellished the opening of a frock coat, not as fasteners but as conceits and novelties. The subject in sepia, cream, gray, and cream imitates true en grisaille with a figure, half naked, carrying a lance. It is set within a dotted delineated thin black hexagon border with 6 loop flourishes. This reserve is surrounded by matte dark sky blue paint. The outer rim is gilded copper and the back is steel. The lovely cream hue imitates ivory. It is in excellent condition.
