Though unmarked, very fine jasperware medallions in this particular steel button setting have been attributed to the joint venture of Matthew Boulton and Josiah Wedgwood. It sounds plausible. Who is to say an incised mark is not beneath a steel bar? This 18th century button is in very fine condition (some very light rust on the back should be removed or sealed with clear nail polish); the detail of the subject is exceptional. A scanner just can't reproduce it. The subject might be Achilles mourning Patroclus, whose affects (breast plate, shield, spear, helmet and dagger) are present. Even the face on the smaller shield shows a detailed face. It measures 1 & 7/16" large.
