This is a rare hand painted garden landscape view, from the 18th century, depicting the grotto at Chateau de Raincy in France. Included in an 18th century painting of the chateau and showing the grotto. Nothing is extant of this large estate, except a small portion of the grand orangerie. The grotto has a room with a door and window--one can only imagine the interior. It measures 1 & 5/8" large and is excellent condition. (I just found a painting that showed the "grotto" when it was a cave folly on dry land....thus explaining the door!)
