I used to collect paperweights, so I know a good one when I see it :) This late 18th century button is intricately embellished with gold and (tarnished) silver foil, stamped into acanthus leaf patterns, on a very pinky iridescent white pearl. The center jewel, however (and it is not pin-shanked) in a tiny complex cane paperweight. I think it is very likely French because the cane is one commonly seen on 19th c. Clichy paperweights. Clichy formed in 1830, but did so by merging already existing glass makers in France. Paperweights started completing the desk tops in fine libraries in the late 18th century. This incredible button measures 1 & 7/16" in very fine condition. The only other button I have seen with a comparable paperweight is in the Safro Epstein book Buttons, described as "enamel".
