This is a large 1 & 3/8" 19th century hand painted porcelain button with a distinctly French look. The Renaissance figure is a herald in colorful fancy attire with a banner of arms and a rapier sword. It has an attractive matte black border with tiny trefoils suggestive of fleur de lis. It has an uncommon glazed back and modeled shank. There is a very shallow flake on the back--de minimis.
