I don't know the precise age of this "Sailor's Valentine" button, but I do not believe it is early 19th c. as represented to me when I bought a set of them. I think it is early or perhaps even mid-20th century. It is nonetheless an amazing example of New England craftsmanship made of various natural materials under glass in gilt wood. It is one-of-a-kind and in excellent condition. The tiny bug is made of shell and teeny turquoises. It is in exceptionally fine condition and measures 2" large.
