The 4 Russian schools which are famous for the art of hand painting Russian lacquer boxes were started by Russian icon painters first in the 1918 Circa, then developed in the 1930s and 1940s.. Each of the 4 schools have distinct styles of subject, colors used, and ways of signing. This lacquer trinket box is from the Kholui school and is very early as it has the crazing consistent with the early experimentation of making the lacquer boxes. It is in the distinctive Kholui style of painting as seen in this lovely village scene. This school of artists is known for the warm earthy colors. Both the Kholui and the Mstera schools did not date their paintings. This is signed characteristically with the School, the title in the center and signed on the right hand side. The artist is Pyatkova which is also noted on the label on the base which is worn.
This hinged box is classic deep red lacquer on the inside. The village painting is bordered in intricate gold. Lovely and in very good condition with exception of non structural crazing and slight use wear along bottom edge of box as pictured. This lovely Russian lacquer box measures 4.75" by 1.5" By 2.25", a lovely signed early example of this dramatic iconic art.
