Fine pictorial English sampler worked on a linen panel. The quality of the needlework is superb. The tiny petit point stitches are tightly stitched with silk thread. All the images are finely detailed displaying the artistry of the stitcher. There is a great variety of images laid out in a symmetrical pattern---10 large ones and 18 smaller ones (see all photos).
Some of the motifs are the following: a lion, jardinieres overflowing with flowers, swans, monkey, squirrel, windmills, boats, bees, dog and cat, milkmaids with their cows, church, barn with horse and wagon, house with mother dog and puppy, and various buildings. The border is a meandering floral.
The linen panel and narrow frame measure 24" high by 14" wide
The condition is very good for a piece that is 167 years old. There are a few missing stitches here and there. The bottom left corner has some minor damage. None that take away from the piece, in my opinion. This piece is a real treat for the eyes!
The text of the sampler reads:
Tis religion that can give
Sweetest pleasures while we live
Tis religion must supply
Solid comfort when we die
After death its joys will be
Lasting as eternity
Be the living God my Friend
Then my bliss shall never end
It is signed by the Stitcher Alice Haslip Her Work Finished December 18 1855 Taught by Miss Harding
A sweet homage to her teacher
