Large early 19th Century English embroidery of a playful spaniel within a floral border. Done in wool and silk threads, the piece consists of beautifully executed needlepoint and petit point stitches. The spaniel and flowers are all done in petit point with the background in needlepoint. The talented stitcher had a fine and sophisticated eye for design. The color retention for a piece of this age is remarkable. I believe the name of the dog is sewn on the letter he is holding in his mouth. This was obviously someone's very special pup and must have taken hours and hours to complete! A rare and special piece.
The condition is excellent given its age of approximately 200 years
The embroidery is housed in the original mahogany frame with brass handle to hang.
Embroidery measures 23.5" wide by 24.75" high
Frame measures 24.5" wide by 26.25" high
