Collected in New Mexico in the 1920's, theses fabulous examples of Plains influenced beadwork among the Jicarrilla Apache are wonderful to behold. The stark color choices and contrasting stripe designs are classic Apache in origin, yet the style is Northern Plains in cut and design. This Northernmost Apache people did much trading with their Plains neighbors and their dress and decorative style reflected that. These sinew sewn moccasins are almost 100% intact with only one or two missing lanes of beds towards the heel area. There is a small 1 3/4" seam separation on the left moccasin, the tongue is also missing a small amount of leather. The moccasins are slightly stiff yet somewhat flexible and are edged with faded and soiled tradecloth.
Measuring 10 1/2" long and 4" high. these are unique and beautifully rare early examples of Northern Apache beadwork.
