A beautiful set of early Arapaho men's moccasins from the 1880's early reservation period. These wonderfully executed moccasins feature a unique expanded upper sole beaded area with early four color design elements. Made of sinew sewn deer hide with elk parfleche soles, this pair is exquisite. Measuring approximately 11" in length. They are supple and intact.
An early reservation example, these moccasins represent the stylistic traditions of the Indian Wars period. Although this example dates from the early reservation period In the 1890’s to the turn of the century. Still present in this example are the early post- Civil War bead colors featuring chalk white, red center rose and other early diagnostic period colors. Attached to the deer hide uppers with deer or elk sinew the soles are fashioned from thick elk par fleche hide. The design patterns harken to the prevalent styles of the 1870’s and are created with an incredible sense of color balance, design and harmonious details.
