Collected in 1929 by the owner of the Spear Cattle Ranch outside Kingman, AZ while on a horse buying trip to the Apache reservation at Dulce, NM, these moccasins along with leggings, horned war headdress, awl cases and knife sheaths where from the personal family of a retired army scout. These moccasins and the other pieces listed in my store are fabulous and unique to this Eastern most Apache group. Because of their unique location and trading relationships with other tribes the beading pattern and style is influenced heavily by local Plains Indian peoples and unlike their Western Apache cousins these moccasins show that distinct influence and yet exhibit the stark color choices and simplicity common to the Jicarilla. These rare moccasins are well worn and the brain tanned leather is very stiff yet the beautiful and sinew sewn beadwork is totally intact and missing only two small white lanes on the rear heel of one moccasin. The condition issues include the leather stiffness and upper part of one tongue is gone. The well worn red dyed muslin is present but somewhat frayed from years of use. One moccasin has small areas of seam separation yet this does not detract from their overall presentation. This pair represents a rare and seldom seen example of Jicarilla Apache style from the 1880's. The stark cobalt blue with white and red patterning is beautiful to the eye. Measuring 10" x 4".
