This antique flax bedspread and matching pillow sham came with a note attached that read: "Made about 1905 by Aunt Tilden (?) Erickson, Sweden. The bedspread is 52" x 77"; the sham is 21" x 20". The linen was hand-loomed from flax grown on the farm; the fancy work is known as "Hardanger." Flax grows naturally (little to no fertilizers or pesticides required) with very little water and all the parts of the plant are used. In the 17th century European flax seeds were brought to Massachusetts and Virginia by ship, and by law the homesteaders were required to cultivate and spin flax for a thriving economy. Today it is blended with other fibers. This needs to be professionally cleaned; I have not attempted to clean it.
