A realistic rendition of a tern shorebird hand carved from wood. The feathers on his back, in particular, look like he could spread them at any moment and fly off.
The bird rests on two realistic legs with webbed feet. The base is flat and has applied sand and seashells that closely resembles a seashore. The figure’s eyes are round with a gold like color. There is old, worn, red felt on the base, and the word TERN written in pencil on the front of the stand.
12” (30.5 cm) long x 4” (10.2 cm) wide x 9” (22.9 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 6.2 oz (640 g)
There are no breaks, cracks, or repairs. The paint and gesso along the edges of a few feathers at the back of the wings towards the tail have either flaked off or were never covered. These same feathers have separated a little from the filler, forming a bit of a gap. Some of the sand on the base is missing.
A fun vintage bird that will add to your folk-art collection. It would be great for a beach house.
