DESCRIPTION:

Here are eight good quality carte de visite showing photographic studio portraits of ladies from the mid to later Victorian era, with particular reference to fashion, hair dressing and hair accessories. They illustrate a variety of hair styles and accessories.

These mid Victorian ladies wear Spanish or tiara style combs. The Spanish styles have an upstanding heading with openwork designs. The tiara combs are decorated with a row of balls. They were hinged so that they could be worn in a number of positions. Both types of combs were equally popular at this time.

They are part of a personal collection of over a thousand such images which I have amassed in the course of my studies into fashion and hairdressing. However technology has moved on and all my images are now digitally stored. So it is time to pass these delightful pictures onto new owners.

Vintage photographs are a fascinating subject which is of interest to a number of collecting groups. As well as collectors of images and those with an interest in early photography they also appeal to re-enactors, students of fashion, and anyone involved in theatrical costuming.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The carte de visite, abbreviated CdV, was a type of small photograph which was patented in Paris in 1854. Each photograph was the size of a visiting card, and such photograph cards were commonly traded among friends and visitors in the 1860s. Albums for the collection and display of cards became a common fixture in Victorian parlours. The immense popularity of these card photographs led to the publication and collection of photographs of prominent persons. The size of a carte de visite was typically 2¼ x 4 ins. They remained popular until the 1870s when they began to be supplanted by the larger cabinet cards.
