Victorian slide necklaces provided the wearer multiple adjustments in positioning slide for a uniquely personal look. The example presented, circa mid to late 1800s features a substantial tubular box link chain, lending a sinewy, silky feel. Medallion style shield slide offers taille d'epargne accent work (an enameling tracery style popular in Victorian jewelry). At center, the ubiquitous cameo makes an appearance in profile in shades of cream. The necklace's chain culminates in flat "O" link fringe tassels.
The necklace has a slip over length of about 28 inches for easy on / off. It can be multiply adjusted as the double barreled slide can provide bilateral uniform or asymmetrical lengths. The chain diameter is approximately 1/4 inch. The slide is about 1 3/8 inches x 1 1/ 8 inches. Cameo proper is approximately 18 millimeters x 13 millimeters. Weight of the necklace is 60.7 grams.
Condition is excellent antique. All components correct and intact. Brass chain, slide and tassels have varying degrees of wear / patina. Tassels are somewhat darker than chain as reflected in images. No polishing done. Slide retains much of it's gold tone or perhaps gold fill. The taille d'epargne tracery has worn a bit but still presents beautifully. No dents, improper bends, kinks, or pulls to chain, slide or tassels. Slide is easily manipulated -- slightly smoother on one side. All soldering secure. All links secure. Cameo (we think some type of hard stone) free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. It remains secure within pronged setting. No stains or discoloration. No damage / no repairs. Patina / wear as expected and noted. Excellent antique.
We have found no discernible marks or stamps. Authentic Victorian necklace. Circa mid to late 1800s.
